Back to School Cookies

September 1st, 2010

Angie, Alice and Char have created some interesting cookies for the kids.   Our Baker Lynn created a new donut called Lynnsie.  It is a red velvet donut with glaze on it.  You can add cream cheese icing for $0.50 more!  Most donuts only last one day but the Lynnsie has a 2 day shelf life and is delicious!  On your way to school stop and get a Lynnsie or a special decorated cookie.   Make the most of your school days; they create memories to last a lifetime.

Marge’s Message

July 30th, 2010

Our trip home from the Farm was nice because we stopped at Rock City where I brought the employees a bunch of special treats home and Gene got to add another bird house to his collection.   We took the grandchildren to the Knoxville Zoo where they could see the animals up close.  If you ever go to Tennessee,  try to include the zoo in your visit.  It’s very worth while. Gene and I are really glad to be home and see everyone.  We missed you all.   I came to the bakery and all the “Bad Boys” asked  ”What happened to your hair?”  (It was a mess!)  It made me feel right at home to be picked on.  After 35 years, teasing has become normal.  No worries  – I can dish it out too!

Fondly,

Marge

Summertime July 2010

July 10th, 2010

Every July, I take my grandchildren to our farm in Georgia.

Kathryn Ann attends a volleyball camp at Valdosta State University where kids from all over try to increase their skills so they can play college volleyball.  Kathryn will be a freshman at Catholic Central next year. and she is working hard as she played volleyball at our Lady of Consolation in Rockford and wants to play at Catholic.  All three of my children graduated from Catholic Central and it is really nice to see Kathryn carrying on the tradition.  Jared, Jake, Sam and Melissa have spent many summers at the farm and they all have memories of Grandpa Gene teaching them how to eat southern style foods.  Besides they have unlimited ice cream in the freezer and all the sweet tea they can drink. The pecan orchard always has sticks to pick up and grass to cut.  Their favorite place to play is in the tree house by the pond.  They love to swing on the front porch.  I enjoy watching them have fun, and we all like to play board games at night.

This year Grandpa will be driving back from the farm with us so make sure to stop in and visit with Gene.

Fondly,

Marge

Coming Events Marge’s Donut Den 36th Year

June 24th, 2010

What an exciting week of specials we had for our 35th Anniversary.  I appreciate the extra effort and time that all the bakers, decorators, sales staff and cake designer’s put forth to make our outstanding products at extraordinary prices for our customers to enjoy.

I can’t tell you what it means to be able to share my business and life with you.  So many of my customers have become like an extended family to me.  With my children all grown, you’ve let me share your little ones and watch them grow up.  The kids have designed their own cakes, dried trays, cleared tables and have made themselves at home at the bakery.

Again, thank you all for your loyalty, support and especially for your friendship and love this past 35 years.  Looking forward to our 36th year.

Fondly,

Marge

p.s.  Don’t forget to get your Marge’s Tee Shirt for your entire family before you go on vacation.  It’s easier to find each other when your all dressed alike.

35th Anniversary June 14th – 19th

June 9th, 2010

35 years ago, I was a single Mom raising 3 young children.  I thought if I was in business for myself, I would be able to spend more time with my children.  WRONG!  Ronda, Scott and Susan got to spend more time working at the bakery washing all the metal pans by hand and doing their homework.  We all led an unstructured life, but it taught my children to be flexible and hard workers.  They all have succeeded in their chosen careers.   I have the most loyal and supportive family and customers that anyone could ever dream of and many of them are still customers today after 35 years.  These customers are my top priority whenever I think of celebrating an anniversary.

Our specials are designed to say thank you to our loyal customers and introduce quality products to folks who are stopping here for the first time.

The week of

June 14th – 19th

visit us for unbelievable specials all week long.

Thank you so much for enabling me to be in business for 35 years.  I love and appreciate everyone of you.  I’m looking forward to meeting more new people and making you part of our extended family and friends.

Fondly,

Marge

Brad Paisley digs Marge’s Donuts

Brad Paisley digs Marge’s doughnuts in Grand Rapids
By John Gonzalez | The Grand Rapids Press
January 24, 2010, 10:25PM
GRAND RAPIDS — Country superstar Brad Paisley loves Marge’s donuts so much he Tweeted about them.

Next to a Twitter photo of guitar-shaped donuts decorated with chocolate and white-frosting strings, he wrote: “The spoils of fame.” Paisley was here in Grand Rapids Saturday night for a near sold-out show at Van Andel Arena. Right before showtime, he posted the photo on TwitPic. As of Sunday night, about 5,200 followers had viewed the photo.

“Adorable. Almost too cute to eat … almost,” said one follower.
Another said: “I’ve never seen anything like these — how clever. Enjoy your treats!”

Gwenn79 said: “Marge’s has the BEST glazed donuts in Grand Rapids ever!”

“They wanted the best, so we gave it to them,” said Marge’s Donut Den owner Marge Wilson with a hearty laugh.

Actually, it all came together through the magic of Google. Marge’s took a call from an advance production crew member on Friday morning, who had Googled “Grand Rapids” and “donuts” and found Marge’s Donut Den at the top of the Google search. The advance scout ordered four dozen variety donuts for Paisley and his crew, and they wanted them delivered at 6 a.m. Saturday.

Marge’s baker Lynn Gerrits decided make an additional dozen of specially made, guitar-shaped, glazed donuts, and a white cake with Brad Paisley’s name on it. Cake decorator Alice Jaszczyszyn put on the final touches “and made them look prettier,” Marge said.

No one in the store took photos of the donuts or cake.

“We didn’t think about it, we just made them,” said Jaszczyszyn, who has worked at Marge’s for four years. “Everybody was so excited.”

The bill for the four dozen donuts was $46, which was paid in cash. But Marge threw in the guitar donuts and cake, which she said goes for about $75, for free. “That was our gift to him,” she said.

Marge did not attend the concert and did not get to meet Paisley because she was in a hurry to begin her vacation in Arizona.

Asked if she ever made doughnut for other stars, she said: “We made a dozen donuts for Tony Curtis when he was her for a Broadway show (in 2003). I got to meet him. And he gave me a kiss. I told my husband I wasn’t going to wash my face for a month.”

Did her husband, Gene, mind?
“No,” said Marge, who is 70 years old. “He said (Curtis) was too old for me.”
